MTSU coach Davis' bond with daughters strong 'win or lose'
The best feeling in the world for Ally Davis is when she hugs her father, Kermit Davis, after MTSU basketball games. Win or lose, Ally Davis still finds her way on the court of the Murphy Center to hug her father, who is entering his 15th year as MTSU’s men's coach. And for Kermit Davis, he wouldn’t have games end any other way.

Middle Tennessee State is looking to join the American Athletic Conference if that league loses teams to a possible Big 12 expansion. MTSU athletics director Chris Massaro sent a letter to AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco in May explaining why the Blue Raiders, who are members of Conference USA, would be the ideal option if the AAC begins a search for new members.

Titans draft MTSU safety Kevin Byard in third round
Kevin Byard is staying home in Middle Tennessee after being selected by the Tennessee Titans on Friday in the NFL draft. Byard was drafted with the 64th overall pick of the third round by the Titans, who worked out the MTSU safety multiple times ahead of the draft. "It feels great and I'm blessed with this opportunity," said Byard, surrounded by family and friends at his home in Georgia.

MTSU football’s latest commitment will play for two people when he steps onto the Floyd Stadium turf in 2017. Zack Dobson, an athlete out of Fulton High in Knoxville, committed to the Blue Raiders Friday. It was a joyful moment in a tough year for the young football player. Last December, Dobson’s brother Zaevion was shot and killed while protecting others outside of a Knoxville home.

MTSU falls to Western Michigan in Bahamas Bowl
Western Michigan edged MTSU in a 45-31 shootout in the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl on Thursday. The Broncos (8-5) defeated the Blue Raiders (7-6) for the school’s first ever bowl win. MTSU, meanwhile, dropped to 1-4 in bowl games. It was a shootout from the start, with both teams scoring on long plays and both teams scoring 17 points in the first quarter.

MTSU athletics subject of federal investigation
The Office for Civil Rights of the Department of Education has launched a broad investigation into MTSU’s athletic department. According to a letter dated March 8 obtained by The Daily News Journal on Wednesday, the department received a complaint on Nov. 19 alleging female athletes are discriminated against and do not receive the same treatment as their male counterparts.

Law enforcement arrested the eight men Wednesday after an investigation revealed that they allegedly falsified daily and monthly water-quality reports at the Rio Bravo Water Treatment Plant. “The false entries are believed to have been ordered by the director and carried out by supervisors and employees,” the Webb County district attorney's office said.
